Over the next few days leading up to this year’s draft, Acme Packing Company will examine the Packers’ history at each current slot for 2019, as well as run down the names of recent picks around the league at the position. In the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers hold a pair of selections. The first, pick #114, is their own; the second came over from Washington in a trade for safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix last fall. Today, we’ll take a look at the Packers’ results when picking 114th and those of the last few years. While the Packers’ three draftees at 114 played two combined seasons in the NFL, there have been a few notable picks there across the league. Most recently, the Detroit Lions seemed to find a starter at defensive end, drafting Alabama’s Da’Shawn Hand there last spring. Handstarted eight of his 13 games last season Justin Vogel Jersey , recording three sacks and a pair of forced fumbles. After recording a Pro Football Focus grade of 87.3 as a rookie, he is penciled into the starting lineup for 2019 and beyond. The best player ever drafted at 114 is running back Herschel Walker. After he had played two years in the USFL, the Cowboys gambled on him in the fifth round of the 1985 draft. Walker played one more season in the USFL before it folded, and the Cowboys retained his rights after that. He eventually ran for over 8,000 yards with almost 5,000 receiving yards in 12 NFL seasons. Packers’ History at #1141949: Rebel Steiner, DBA defensive back from Alabama, Steiner played for just two seasons in the NFL, starting for the Packers in 1950 and 1951. His first season saw him post some gaudy numbers, as he recorded seven interceptions, including a 94-yard pick-six.1951: Bob Noppinger, OTNoppinger did not suit up in an NFL game, instead serving in the Korean War. He did come back to Green Bay after the war, but had an ankle injury in his only preseason with the team that brought his career to a quick end. Noppinger passed away at the age of 79 in 2006.2000: Anthony Lucas, WRLike Noppinger, Lucas had early injuries in his NFL career that forced him to retire before playing a game in the league. He had a tremendous junior season at Arkansas in 1998 Justin McCray Color Rush Jersey , catching 43 passes for 1,004 yards and ten touchdowns.Recent History at #1142018: Da’Shawn Hand, DE, Alabama (Lions)2017: Samaje Perine, RB, Oklahoma (Washington)2016: Ricardo Louis, WR, Auburn (Browns)2015: Jamil Douglas, G, Arizona State (Dolphins)2014: Aaron Colvin, CB, Oklahoma (Jaguars)2013: B.W. Webb, CB, William & Mary (Cowboys)2012: Jaye Howard, DT, Florida (Seahawks)2011: Cecil Shorts https://www.thepackersfanshop.com/Marwin-Evans-Jersey , WR, Mount Union (Jaguars) If you’d have told Green Bay Packers fans in August their team would have a duplicate record with the Cleveland Browns in December, they’d probably say they’d be stunned the Browns had such a strong season. Now that December is actually here and both teams have identical records and for all the wrong season. What’s worse is both teams have head coaching vacancies and somehow the Packers opening is the less desirable of the two.Does this sound like some version of hell, Packer Nation? It’s not quite as bad as it might sound.Cleveland has been in the basement of the league for decades and has been able to stockpile a lot of young talent thanks to consistently picking in the top five of the draft. Green Bay has spent most of their time picking in the mid-to-late twenties the past decade, save the past two seasons. The Packers do still have Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, but he just turned 35 and has fewer years behind him than he does ahead. The Browns have Baker Mayfield, a gifted but raw young signal caller who could take the throne Rodgers currently holds as the NFL’s most gifted signal callers. There are more factors than the above at play obviously, but the bottom line is the Packers are a victim of their own success in this situation. What the Packers do have going for them is obviously Rodgers but also a young aggressive general manager in Brian Gutekunst. It’s not a bad job by any means, it’s just Cleveland holds an advantage thanks to their long stretch of poor play.
