For the first time in more than 60 years, the British Open is headed across the Irish Sea. The R&A announced Monday that golfs oldest championship will return to Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland for the first time since Max Faulkner won in 1951. That was the only time it was held outside Scotland or England since the Open began in 1860. "We have every confidence Royal Portrush will prove to be an excellent venue in every way," R&A chief executive Peter Dawson said. "There is passionate support in Northern Ireland and we expect there will be huge interest." Dawson said it was the "worst-kept secret," although one mystery remains -- the year. To bring the links course up to modern standards of a major championship, the R&A has recommended using the golf architecture firm Mackenzie & Ebert to create new 17th and 18th holes. Royal Portrush club members would have to sign off on the proposal, though that is likely to be a formality. The next available date is 2019. Dawson said it could be "a year or two longer than that." "It has been more than 60 years since the Open was played here, and its been too long," Dawson said. "And were very excited to be coming back." For years, there has been a quiet push to bring the Open back to Portrush and the movement picked up momentum with the success of three players from Northern Ireland. Graeme McDowell won the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. Darren Clarke captured the British Open a year later at Royal St. Georges. Rory McIlroy won the U.S. Open in 2011 and then the PGA Championship in 2012. Throw in Padraig Harrington, and Irish golfers won seven of 22 majors during one stretch. What really caught Dawsons attention was when Royal Portrush staged a wildly successful Irish Open in 2012, which attracted some 130,000 fans for the week. And then Martin Ebert suggested the right changes to the links course to make it all work. More than just a golf course, the Open now requires room for such amenities as a television compound and a tented village. Dawson said the R&A would be investing several million pounds (dollars), without giving a more detailed estimate. "No Open venue is immune from the march of time," he said. "They all move and they all have to keep up. This isnt any different from that, except that it hasnt had an Open for a long time." Portrush also has held the Senior British Open six times, and is hosting the British Amateur this week. The British Open this year is being played at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake, which had gone 39 years until it returned to the rotation in 2006 with a popular win by Tiger Woods. Turnberry off the Ayrshire coast in Scotland went 17 years without an Open, despite a history that include the famous "Duel in the Sun" between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus. That required work on the roads to alleviate traffic. Dawson said the work involved to get Royal Portrush in shape for an Open "is a little bit more." "That perhaps reflects the time gap," he said. "Its over 60 years since the championship has been here. The requirements of a modern championship are very different from what they were then. But its something thats manageable." Its been a time of happiness and grief, where Ive gotten knocked on my butt both figuratively and literally.A second-round pick out of Florida State, Jones played in 115 games during his nine years in Jacksonville. He spent the 2013 season with Houston and went to training camp with New Orleans last year before getting cut.Jones finished with 913 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns. He was best known for his tenacious blocking — and toughness.I never saw him lose a fight, former teammate and retired centre Brad Meester said. I remember him getting in several scuffles, even in games, and he always came out on top. I remember a game in Pittsburgh and one of their players literally had him down on the ground. You could see Greg on the ground, guy on top of him, and he would use his sheer strength to lift himself off the ground with a guy on him and fight him off. I have never seen anything like that before. Hes a tough, tough player that never quit, and that is what made him so special.Jones missed the 2006 season with a torn knee ligament. He returned the following year and paved the way for a rushing attack that ranked second in the NFL.dddddddddddd That year, Jones was selected as the first alternate for the Pro Bowl. Its funny because people would talk trash to me when Greg wasnt on the field, Jones-Drew said. They wouldnt say too much when he was out there. It just showed you his presence. People wanted to get him out of his game, but Greg did a great job of dominating people whistle to whistle. He would just move on to the next play. Every once in a while he would get into a scuffle. ... That mindset and that attitude, theres always someone that thinks they are just as tough as you. Greg would go out there and show them. The 33-year-old Jones would like to coach in the league or be involved in the personnel side of things.I love the game of football and I want to be around it, he said. Ive done some networking with teams with the hope of landing something, but its a tough field to get into.Jones plans to continue living in Jacksonville, which drafted him as a running back out of college but moved him to fullback.Selflessness and humility are two character traits that come to mind when I think of G, Taylor said. He could have easily rebelled when the coaches decided to move him to fullback.Theres no real glory in that position, but G swallowed his pride and always gave a hundred per cent effort and attention to detail in the classroom and on the practice field. A huge piece of my success from over a five-year span was due to Greg.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFLAuthentic Steelers JerseysAuthentic Cowboys JerseysAuthentic Raiders JerseysAuthentic Chiefs JerseysAuthentic Eagles JerseysAuthentic Redskins JerseysAuthentic Falcons JerseysAuthentic Ravens JerseysAuthentic Browns JerseysAuthentic Cardinals JerseysAuthentic Bills JerseysAuthentic Panthers JerseysAuthentic Bears JerseysAuthentic Bengals JerseysAuthentic Texans JerseysAuthentic Broncos JerseysAuthentic Lions JerseysAuthentic Packers JerseysAuthentic Jets JerseysAuthentic Dolphins JerseysAuthentic Patriots JerseysAuthentic Jaguars JerseysAuthentic Titans JerseysAuthentic Chargers JerseysAuthentic Giants JerseysAuthentic Saints JerseysAuthentic Buccaneers JerseysAuthentic 49ers JerseysAuthentic Seahawks JerseysAuthentic Rams JerseysAuthentic Vikings JerseysAuthentic Colts Jerseys ' ' '
