HOUSTON Authentic Jordan Howard Jersey , Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Mayor of Houston Sylvester Turner on Friday urged the American Red Cross to "honor its promises" in dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.


More than 300 million U.S. dollars have been donated to the Red Cross after Harvey battered Houston and nearby regions. The mayor said he understands helping people on this scale is difficult, but the organization should give proper answers to doubts about how it spends the donated money.


"If you promise people something, you got to make it happen because - otherwise -- don't promise at all," the mayor said.


Many Harvey survivors claim they are not getting the assistance promised by the organization, specifically the 400 dollars promised to families who survived the flood.


The Red Cross said its system for the program went down on Monday.

Martin also questioned why the Red Cross appears to be taking credit for relief efforts in Houston when the local government has been doing most of the work.

The Red Cross has long been criticized over its natural disaster relief efforts, most recently in Miami after Hurricane Irma swept through the city.


In 2010, the Red Cross was exposed to have built only a handful of homes in Haiti following a catastrophic magnitude-7 earthquake, despite receiving 500 million dollars in donations.
